The idea for The Dili Weekly as a weekly newspaper came about in 2007 after a discussion between two Timorese media minds – Otelio Ote and Emanuel Braz.
The first issue hit the streets on 31 January 2008.
The Dili Weekly is the only weekly bi-lingual English-Tetum newspaper written by Timorese journalists available in Timor-Leste. The vision of the publication is to enable international and national communities living and working in Timor-Leste to be “on the same page” when it comes to information that may well affect the way in which policy and development initiatives are being undertaken.
There is a strong disconnect between the international and national communities in Timor-Leste.
The Dili Weekly will help reduce the information gap about East Timorese affairs and current realities in the country between internationals and nationals in Timor-Leste. News will be written in English as well as in Tetum in the same publication.
The Dili Weekly is a 24 page bi-lingual (Tetun and English) publication.
The Dili Weekly provides weekly independent news to readers in an independent Timor-Leste. The Dili Weekly strives to provide good quality news according to international journalism standards.
In its third year of existence, The Dili Weekly is self-sustainable, through revenue from the limited advertising content and subscriptions the newspaper is able to generate.
The Dili Weekly is a legal entity and is registered with Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Trade, Commerce, and Industries as a media organization business since 2009.
