Timor-Leste’s first local Rotary club was recently established in Dili and will focus on helping communities in rural areas.

Timor-Leste’s first local Rotary club was recently established in Dili and will focus on helping communities in rural areas. The Rotary Club of Dili Lafa’ek Timor-Leste (ROCDLAF-TL) is specifically for young people interested in humanitarian work. ROCDLAF-TL president Silverio Martins Pinto said its aim was to encourage young people to share the skills they had with remote communities. The social support provided will be based on the communities’ needs and funded by club members. He said the team had already identified the community needs in the Baucau and Lautem municipalities. “We will pipe water to Baguia administrative post, Baucau municipality and in Lospalos, Lautem municipality,” he said at the launch ceremony at the MSS hall room in Kaikoli, Dili. He said the club also planned to provide training and raise awareness among youth about the environment and drug issues so that they did not fall into the trap. He said ROCDLAF-TL welcomed new members who wanted to get involved in community work. As the service is unpaid, he said young people must be working in order to join. Forty members officially launched ROCDLAF-TL as the first local organization established to help communities in Timor-Leste on June 18. Meanwhile, the Governor of the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise, Mike Woods, said Rotary International was committed to supporting the new club and helping the community in Timor-Leste. “Rotary International will support this new organization by providing social assistance to the community in Timor-Leste,” he said. He said ROCDLAF-TL would be responsible for identifying community needs, as well as fundraising activities. He hoped that the new rotary club would get involved in social activities in response to community needs. A Representative from Rotary Club Melbourne also presented a golden bowl to the ROCDLAF-TL president to collect donations at members meetings.
