The National Directorate for Irrigation (DNI) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAP) will rehabilitate two irrigation schemes; one in the District of Ainaro and the other in Suai, so as to facilitate rice growers to improve their yields.
“This year we will rehabilitate two schemes in Oebaba, Suai and Raibere in Ainaro. Currently the project is being tendered out with all the required documents already submitted,” said Martinho Pereira, the National Director for Irrigation, in Comoro, Dili.
Feasibility studies for these schemes were carried out in 2009, however it is only now they are being implemented. Meanwhile MP Josefa Alvares Soares said the plans were good and its implementation should correspondingly have the same quality.
“It must be of quality and care must be taken to choose the materials, they must be hardy, it must provide good results and the rice production must increase as an indicator and also to ensure reduced imports from other countries,” suggested Alvares.
