The Goate Bridge in Soro, Ainaro District, was damaged in 2011 however the Secretary of State for Public works has been unable to rehabilitate.
“We shall look into this bridge’s condition, but it will be done slowly,” said Abrão Vieira, Head of Bridges Department at the Secretariat of State for Public Works (SEOP), from his office in Mandarin, Dili.
He lamented this situation however stated during the five-year mandate, SEOP had rehabilitated and built many roads and bridges, but in doing so they had to prioritise work so the rehabilitation of some bridges were left for a later stage.
Member of Parliament (MP) Joaquim Amaral said during this period, timely attention to small bridges has been lacking and almost every big bridge was rehabilitated using emergency funds.
“There is no assistance to the smaller bridges because they focused in emergency cases, so the lesser ones were abandoned,” said MP Amaral.
He asked Government to pay attention to the smaller bridges because they are also important for national development.
