The Ministry of Education through the General Directorate from Basic school and Adult Education organized a meeting with Dili Municipality Director about the pre-school enrollment for the academic year 2018.

Dili Municipality Education Director, Duarte Braganza said the pre-school enrollment started on November 19, and to make sure that all the children fulfill the provided criteria.

The General Director (DJ) from Basic school and Adult education, Cidalio Leite said the purpose of this meeting, is to remind about the regulations of pre-school enrollments released last year, and to ensure they are well-implemented in pre-school enrollments.
"As we all know and according to the academic calendar, enrollments starts on 18-23 December 2017," said DJ Leite, in Dili.
Through this meeting, a reminder was made to the Dili Municipality Education Director to apply the regulation of pre-school enrollments and Basic Education in the academic year 2018.
"The main regulation is that children need to be at the age of 3 to 5 and who turn (3 or 5) by 31 December can register," he said.
He went on to inform the criteria for enrollment is for children tobe at the age from 3 to 5 as this is based on the basic education law, with the number of students being 25 students to one room and each teacher should teach 25 students.
"A teacher should teach 25 students in the morning and 25 students in afternoon the duration being two and a half hours," he said.
Currently they have 108.000 children and from this number there are 9.000 children at the age of 5 who have enrolled, with some schools still lacking students because of over age.
"What we want is a teacher to teach 25 students in one room with 50 students in two rooms, if there is a lack of students in enrollment then the teachers may add more students, so overall there will be 50 students," he said.
He hoped that pre-school enrollments will be well-implemented in 2018 and will register more than 50,000 students and 1,000 teachers.
“We will try to implement this target on December 18 for the academic year 2018,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dili Municipality Education Director, Duarte Braganza said the pre-school enrollment started on November 19, and to make sure that all the children fulfill the provided criteria.
"The criteria for the enrollment are that children should be at the age from 3 to 5, we should give them priority to start pre-school," he said.
He said the age from 3-4, they start their first year of pre-school and second year at the age from 4 to 5, we should give priority as this is the time for them to learn at pre-school.
"We should give more priority to children from 4 to 5 so they can take an opportunity in the school, so when they finish they can immediately access into the basic school at the age of 5 to 6," he said.
He said children access basic school at the age of 6, this is included in the State’s budget and school system to accept children at the age of 6 not under 5.
"We cannot force the children to start their first grade at a young age with the lack of mentality, as this may harm their physical development," he said.
"Therefore our diploma is to issue an evolution of education for children," he said.
The guidelines have been given to the schools and will be implemented according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education.
