MP Questions Cigarette Ads In Public Places

Members of National Parliament are concerned with cigarette advertising in public places, as it can have a negative impact on young people.A Member of Parliament has strongly questioned the use of cigarette advertising in public places because of the negative impacts on people’s health, especially young people.

MP Josefa Alvares Soares said, as Timor-Leste is a new country with a small population, when the government does not pay attention to this problem it can be a big threat to human resources because now Timor-Leste has a high instance of tuberculosis and cancer also.

RF: Gender Subjects Needed in School Curriculum

Vice Minister for Basic Education Dulce Soares Rede Feto (Women’s Network) Timor-Leste urges the Ministry of Education to include gender as a subject in the national curriculum so students can better understand gender and its contribution to development.

Rede Feto Representative Laura Soares Abrantes said students as part of the new generation need to know about gender because Timor-Leste still has high rates of inequality, discrimination and violence against women.

IHPSOTL Accuses VCCT of Discrimination against MSM and Transgender

Program Manager of IHPSOTL ,Rui CarvalhoProgram Manager, Rui Carvalho, of the ISEAN Hivos Program Satellite Office in Timor-Leste, accuses personnel working at the Volunteer Confidential Counselling Testing facilities of discriminating against MSM (men who have sex with men) and transgender Timorese when these clients go for HIV/AIDS tests.

TL Government: No more shelters planed for 2013

The Ministry of Social Solidarity does not intend to build new women shelters in 2013 but will continue to support existing ones.The National Director for Social Assistance said the government doesn’t have plans to build more shelter homes for victims of gender based violence but will continue to give financial support to develop existing shelter houses.

World Vision Japan and Timor-Leste worked together to provide clean water to communities in Bobonaro.In 2013 World Vision Japan in cooperation with Work Vision Timor-Leste will work towards providing clean water to communities in the district ofBobonaro.

“I am very happy today to conduct this signing ceremony for funds from World Vision Japan for a project to fix water and sanitation in communities in the district of Bobonaro,” said Mr.Miura, World Vision Japan’s Representative in Dili.
