The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-Moon, invited Timor-Leste’s Minister for Finance, Emilia Pires, to join a High-level Panel of Eminent Persons meeting in New York in September 2012, to work on the post 2015 Development Agenda.
“The UN in Timor-Leste is very pleased with the nomination of H.E. Emilia Pires by the Secretary General. This only goes to show how Timor-Leste has a special role in global development,” said UN Representative to Timor-Leste, Mr Finn Rieske-Nielsen at the UN Headquarters, (03/08), in Caicoli, Dili.
According to him, this is an example of Timor-Leste’s capacity in taking the lead in the promotion of sustainable development and poverty reduction.
Chief of Staff for the Minister of Finance, José Abilio, said the Minster Pires was invited on grounds of her extensive experience.
“Her experience as the President of the G7+, coupled with the previous five years at the helm of the Ministry of Finance, where she was instrumental in major reforms, will contribute significantly to the workings of the High-level Committee on global development,” said Chief of Staff José Abilio.
